该词源自拉丁语 amplus （大的、宽敞的；丰富的、众多的；宏伟的、高贵的），15世纪中期经古法语 ample （大的、宽的、广阔的）进入英语后，即用来表示“足够的、充足的、丰裕的、大量的”以及“宽敞的、面积大的”，主要指在大小、数量、容量、范围、规模等方面不仅满足需要或需求，而且绰绰有余，常意味着可以自由扩展，或者说没有束缚或限制，比如：
